Teaching Empathy Through Art
Empathy is a vital life skill — the ability to understand and care about how others feel. For children, empathy doesn’t always come from explanation alone; it grows through experience. Art provides a powerful and gentle way for children to step into someone else’s world.
When children draw, paint or create together, they naturally begin to share stories, perspectives and emotions. A simple activity — such as drawing “how today feels” or creating artwork inspired by a friend’s story — can open meaningful conversations about emotions, differences and shared experiences.
Art encourages children to:
• Listen to others’ stories without judgement
• Recognise that feelings can look different for everyone
• Develop compassion and kindness through shared creativity
By creating together, children learn that while we are all unique, emotions connect us. At The Lollipop Trust, we use creative expression as a bridge — helping children understand not just themselves, but each other too.
